While researching hyphenated domains I found lots of conflicting information so I provides you with a distilled view of what’s currently thought to be the facts regarding hyphens in domains.

When I started Name Search Domain I had a lot of trouble getting a domain which i can use to reflect the topic of my site. After quite a bit of research I made a decision on NameSearchDomain.com, without hyphens.

It was once the case that utilizing a hyphen to separate keywords inside your website name would give a better ranking within the search engines. For some time this was the case but due to the over zealous use of keywords in domains, search engines like google now think about this like a spamming technique. Using hyphens in your domain name still makes it much simpler for search engines like google to see however it generally will not benefit your ranking.

If you are using an unhyphenated website name like myself using keywords it is generally thought that search engines such as Google can select the keywords. If you are using hyphens then your keywords are easier to pick out out of your website name. Therefore if there is no internet search engine benefit to using hyphens and keywords in domains why do people still use them. The reply is undoubtedly anchor link benefits and easy readability.

For those who have hyphens in your domain name it’s easier for any human to read and recognise the keywords in a domain. Take a look at specialistcheeseemporium.com or visit specialist-cheese-emporium.com. It’s quite obvious how the hyphenated version will probably be recognised more easily.

Recognising the website name is one thing but entering a domain name into your browser is another. It’s easier for somebody to type the unhyphenated domain name which is easier for somebody to give out the website name to some customer whether it does not have hyphens inside it. Many people might not understand what a hyphen is.

There’s thought to be another advantage of keywords in domain names and that’s anchor links, that’s keywords in back links to your site. If your webmaster links back for your site using their site they often make use of the domain name since the anchor-text. This is obviously good for you since it works well for reinforcing those keywords with your site towards the search engines. So if your site is specialistcheeseemporium.com they may type this as all a word or even as specialist cheese emporium. For the hyphenated version they’d probably type specialist-cheese-emporium.com.

So when choosing your website name and choosing whether or not to use hyphens you have to consider how the domain name will probably be interpreted and utilized by others, not machines. I selected my domain name without hyphens purely because most people will type domains with no hyphens. I actually do use hyphens but only in my filenames as this makes it easier for people to see the ones are not as likely to key in a page name as is also web site.

The extension is considered to be a TLD ( Top Level Domain ) and there are plenty to select from, but to date.Com supercedes all. Investing in a premium website name is a necessary step in bringing your business on the internet.
A premium domain will be more expensive than a new domain (premiums range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars) depending on the name. The price is determined based on marketability, spelling, traffic, and economic trends. Highly notable domains have stronger branding potential, are easier to remember, and attract more traffic – so they may bring a higher price tag – but depending on the name and what you intend your site to do for your business, it may be worth the brand, investment.

One of the reasons why a premium domain is particularly sought after is because of the traffic it can generate. Increased visibility can produce Lead Generation. There are 2 kinds of traffic that come from a premium domain Direct navigation & search volume. Direct navigation has proved to convert the best. Nonetheless search volume commands much more traffic than direct navigation and the benefit is the SEO can be optimised. This in turn promotes business expansion and allows you to reach a larger audience.

Web site names are virtual real estate and premium domains are similar to properties in Bel-Air and Palm Beach. Just like getting a house that is in need of repair in a nice locality you can score a premium domain and increase its equity via development and promoting. Traffic, conversions & cash all increase a domains equity which in turn allows you to sell the domain for an acceptable return or sell the domain along with your business for multiples of the money it produces. Therefore a high impact domain name can be a good investment. Premium domains that are developed and ranking in search engines continue to drive leads with out the often exuberant cost of a continuing paid for promotional program. All in all a premium domain is an investment in your business and your selling objectives. It is becoming widely recognised that domains have and will continue to go up in worth faster than any other known commodity.
High Impact Domains offer a sense of credibility to the business that owns it. Owning one can often mean that you are the definitive resource online for that niche. Owning a premium domain also allows you to create emails specific to the domain rather than a universal e-mail service like hotmail or yahoo. This promotes professionalism and unity in your web presence. All in all a premium domain should be a category blaster. This means ensuring that it is the dominant keyphrase in its vertical and is a generic term.

If you’re the owner of the rights to a particular term it is in your interest to acquire premium domains that revolve around your vertical to prevent rivals in your space. In other words a top value domain can protect your brand. High impact domains are an advantage to any business and help drive hundreds of thousands of potential clients to your website.

It’s a known fact that owning a keyword specific domain can help a website rank quicker in the search sites. Nothing tops it, This method definitely saves time & money. In the domain industry it’s not about quantity, it’s truly about quality. Target 10-100 internet, highimpactdomainnames rather than a big portfolio of low quality domains. In the final analysis you’ll be satisfied you kept speculation to a minimum and invested only in premium domains. In my experience a domain name increases its value when some other person wants it. Hence for a little extra investment, you could secure an intuitive, memorable name that could help your business differentiate itself in a crowded market by building a memorable online brand and help your business on its way to making a great impact on the web.

Now that it?s time mature enough for you to take your small business to the next level ?Internet?. Choosing your business domain name is vital for many reasons. Changing domain names in the future, should you Are forced to do for some reasons, invite unexpected detrimental consequences. (Please see my personal mistake of the bottom of this article).
Below are some Very basic tips for your domain search.

Start your domain search with commonly used words in your business. For example, if you have a plumbing supply business, you should have words related to your business such as planning, plumber, supply, drainage, flow, water and so on.
You’ll then buildup with words of your personal name, description of your works such as licensed, quick, reliable fast or refund or your location of your business to name a few.

If you already have a business/company /corporate name then you may choose your domain name with the business name with a dot com extension. This tends to work well on business cards and in other types of off-line advertising.

If you want to get free traffic from the search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, you need careful consideration. You need to sprinkle keywords in your domain name which searchers are most likely to type in search engines.

There are many various domain extensions like dog com, dot net, dot org and many others. A domain name extension like .com is particularly intended for the commercial organizations, .net domain designed for network services just like the Internet Service Providers and .org designed for non-profit organizations. For this reason if you choose .org you will lose potential costumers just when they are looking up phone books.
Also if you choose a dot net or a dot org, you’ll spend time explaining the fact that it’s not a dot com.
You waste your time when you are talking to customers on the phone or face to face to make sure they type in correctly your fancy extension and also if customers forget it or mistype it and they cannot find your sites you will lose potential customers.

Tens of thousands of domain names are registered everyday and what you want may be already gone, but don’t get disappointed, there are still many domain names on.
Last, but not least make sure that you use your imagination.

Never ever rush in to decide your domain name unless you have any reasons you must set up web sites urgently. Changing domain names in the future after you find domain name best suited to you will cause you tremendous headaches. Below is my personal mistake.
I named my blog site http://helpforexback.blogspot.com/ WITHIN A DAY to write posts regarding ?how to get ex back?, but soon after that I’m primarily posting on dating/relationships in general, not specifically Ex Back. However I already put this domain name on search engines, twitter and Facebook and changing domain names is a huge mess so I decided to keep as it is even though it?s not reflecting my postings precisely.
If this is a serious business site, the consequences are fatal.
Very lastly never ever rush in.

How does a domain name affect your Search Engine rankings? What actually contributes to the value of a domain name? Let?s take a look.

1. Type-in Traffic
Years ago, many people didn?t understand the difference between the URL (Uniform Resource Locater) or address of the actual website and the search window in Google. One goes directly to a particular website, like the address of a house. The other is an actual search. So people would just type in what they were looking for in the *address* field?i.e. ?new shoes?. This is called type-in traffic.

This meant that if you were lucky enough to buy a domain like ?newshoes.com? for around $7.00 per year, you would automatically receive a respectable amount of traffic to that domain?type-in traffic. This would make the domain valuable, as it could be parked or used for an ecommerce shoe store?traffic equals money.

It is 2010 now, people are more savvy. More people use the search window and they know that it is a search window. So, type-in traffic has diminished, not to mention that everyone is hip to domain ownership, any ones with any value have been bought up. Goddaddy.com even buys domains they feel will have high traffic and resells them to you and me at a premium price, this is a premium domain. By the way, they will quickly settle for 70% of the asking price if asked. Type-in traffic isn?t what it used to be and domains are more expensive.

Does it matter?
The short answer is ?not much?. Content is still king. Google works very hard to return relevant, high-quality results for it visitors. Look at Facebook.com, Google.com, yahoo.com, the domain can be anything. Can it help? Absolutely. If your domain contains your keywords you will get a little more love from Google and the search engines, but will it make or break your website? No. Shorter is better, descriptive is better. I recommend considering buying a premium domain, it is a good start.

Domain name traffic
Listen, I have owned a lot of domains, upwards of 450 at one point. I have purchased premium domains, acted as a domain broker for my clients, parked domains at different domain parking services like sedo.com, parked.com and many others. I have struggled to optimize over 150 landing pages in an effort to make a passive income?all with not much success, except learning a lot about how domains work.

Look, there are many ways to measure traffic. All of my websites are built on a CMS and it has it?s own traffic stats. Well, I also use Google Analytics on all my sites. When I compare the numbers from both, they are different. There is no way to tell who is linking to your site, conclusively. There is no way to be 100% accurate on where the traffic is coming from. I have been a victim of a scam where you ?purchase traffic?. The company explained that they had high-traffic websites?that were relevant?that you would get links from and traffic to your site. I found that that was not the case. Technically, I got traffic, but who knows where it came from. With all the traffic, I got not new customers and a very high bounce rate. The bottom line is: Don?t believe traffic reports, unless you are using Google Analytics and have personal access to the live Google Analytics account.

Old domains
One cool thing you can do is to check out archive.org . This site will let you see what a website looked like years ago. It will show you if there was a website associated with the domain you are looking at. If you want to see what your competitor?s site looked like back in ?08 you can check it out. With old domains, you want to be careful. You want to know what kind of site it was, you don?t want to do a lot of back paddling in the first few months of your new domain/website ownership. Type in ?link: yournewdomainname.com? in Google, and it will show you how many links point to that domain, same thing using Yahoo!, I use both.

Social Media

With the current trend of savvy marketers using Facebook and YouTube.com as main forefronts on their marketing campaigns, this gives domain names even less value. It actually reduces the importance of the brands entire website. Toyota recently closed a national ad by giving the address of their YouTube.com channel, not their website address. This direction both diludes and broadens the company?s marketing penetration, and for sure minimizes the impact of the domain on their website, as it would for any company.

Candidly, it’s clear they didn’t do their research before they did their agreement.

Ironically, it seems the buyer hadn’t really done his, either. Anyone who has been swamped by advertisements for ‘global domains’ can easily understand that it’s a burgeoning business. The specter of purchasing a domain at a much better price than the more common ‘dot com’ or ‘dot net’ or ‘dot org’ is most attractive to most would-be entrepeneurs on restricted budgets. This niche’s market leader is most likely Global Domains International (GDI), which has no doubt put Western Samoa on the mental map of many a cybernaut. The key element in that deal is that the Western Samoan government granted the rights to GDI in return for a royalty for every domain sold.

Niue’s name is derived from the local language’s expression for, “Look, a coconut!” It seems they should have used theirs more carefully before signing a domain deal with Bill Semich in 1998.

An American businessman whose former station was editor for a computer magazine, Semich recognized the potential value in the marketability of rare domains. Apparently finding the ‘nu’ extension an appealing letter arrangement, he signed a contract with the Niue government that gave him the private rights to it.

It wasn’t a one-way deal. Semich assured free wireless access for all 2000 of Niue’s people and he delivered, completing the installation of an island-wide set-up of translator towers in 2003. The country’s leaders surely felt they had provided their population with a service for the new century which would favorably ensconce their place in island history.

Semich, meanwhile, intended to hawk his bargain domains to Americans. He had no idea that his ideal customers were in Sweden, where ‘nu’ is the local word for ‘now.’

Apparently,’now’ is a hot marketing action term in any language, so Semich was pleasantly surprised to find the Swedes flocking to his cyber-property. As a translated example of why this works for them, ‘drive.now’ (which would be ‘köra.nu’) is a very persuasive sales slogan which becomes an ideal URL for a Swedish driving school. To date, Semich has had 110,000 sales of ‘dot nu’ domains at $30 a year, which has considerably swollen the coffers of his ‘.NU Domain Ltd’ to the point that its website’s home page default language is now — or nu — in Swedish.

Actually, Semich has cunningly taken advantage of this windfall to become the first domain provider to incorporate a complete Unicode character set into its scripts, allowing users whose alphabets have distinctive characters — in Swedish, that would be the letters ‘å,’ ‘ä’ and ‘ö’ — to remain true to their language instead of settling for Anglicized versions, which often destroy their original meaning.

Besides a domain you will need to decide on some type of hosting or a increase website traffic for your enterprise.

Should you renew your domain name for a long period of time? And if so, how long is long sufficient? If you wish to stay ahead of your competition, then you might consider looking at the length of time your competitors have registered their domain names. If your competitors have generally renewed their domain names for one or two years, you might consider registering your area name for 5 or 10 many years.

Whilst putting off your domain name’s expiration date may assist your look for engine rankings, keep in mind that this might be only a small victory when it comes to search engine rankings. Following working tough to managed dedicated server the last thing you wish to do is lose that traffic.

Its good business sense to register a area for at least 10 many years. You do not wish to deal with the procedure annual procedure of renewing them each year. It?s greatest to obtain the area names that you want to keep for a while and renew then on a 5 to 10 year plan. If your domain name expires, there’s a good chance that someone will register your area identify immediately after it expires. If, for whatever reason, you don’t renew your domain name, someone watching a ‘watch list’ of expiring area names will try to capitalize on the online business that you’ve built more than the years. They know that there is potential web site traffic they can have merely by renewing your old domain identify. By renewing your area identify for several years, your area name won’t expire for a while, and it won’t be opened up to expired domain identify buyers.

If you truly want to stay ahead of the competition, you might think about registering or renewing your domain identify for 100 many years. Presently, Network Solutions (www.netsol.com) is the only registrar offering the 100 year choice, which costs $999.00. GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com), currently offers to renew or register a domain name for 10 many years, at a discount of $6.95 per year. Yes, you can lose critical positioning in the search engines if you don?t reregister your area identify in time. You may have to begin the SEO procedure all over again!

According to Matt Cutts, Google spokesman, Google’s algorithm doesn’t penalize for use of hyphenated domains even if there are more than 2 or even 3 in separated by hyphens. So keyword-rich-domains.com will fair no better with Google than keywordrichdomains.com will.

Of course this is not necessarily true of other search engines. For most of us, our main concern is what Google’s software will or won’t do, but there are a lot of other search engines out there too.

The one area Matt Cutts separated out was situations where there could be confusion as to where the breaks between keywords should be. An example shown was that of books-exchange.com vs. booksexchange.com for obvious reasons. Matt claims that Google can tell which division is appropriate for your site, one would assume due to content.

But what if you are using that particular domain primarily as a redirect? I am not completely sure they would pick it up in that case, so keep that in mind when buying domains to use exclusively as redirects…

Interestingly, Matt says that it is best to separate your keywords in a path by hyphens as many search engines will pick them up much better this way. He specified that hyphens were far better than underscores. What we are referring to here is the section of a particular url that occurs after the extension (.com, .net, .info…).

So according to this yourdomain.com/whatever-you-want.html is better than yourdomain.com/whateveryouwant.html for many search engines.

To take advantage of this in a WordPress blog situation you need to change the Permalink structure under Settings to Custom and type in this: /%category%/%postname%.html

This changes the pathways structure for your blog and allows you to hyphenate the keywords you choose to include in the pathway portion of the url for each post.

None of this is to say there aren’t downsides to hyphenating the root domain such as best-domains.info Most of these have to do with verbally communicating your website address and the confusion that can result. Some people also think that a non-hyphenated domain name just looks better.

These concernsare not entirely frivolous, but let’s face it folks we are also dealing with a commodity that is not unlimited! There are definite advantages to keyword rich domains just as there are advantages to a .com over a .net or a .info as this site uses.

So you weigh your desired keywords over availability of extension. You take into account whether your keywords should be hyphenated, or even if the non-hyphenated domain is available. Keeping in mind your intended use for the domain (redirects) you then make the best decision available to you…

Competition over keyword rich domain names is at a fever pitch these days, so these issues are not going away anytime soon, or probaby ever!

I advise you to use the extensions necessary to get the keywords you want but be alert to opportunities that present themselves in the marketplace. Use hyphens to get your desired keywords when you need to, or to segment ambiguous domain names when necessary.

Apply balance using hyphens in domain names and you will be fine…
